FLAVOURS IN SICILY

 

 

 

An original trip to eastern Sicily, made of gastronomic experiences. Individual tour with private car and expert driver.

Day 1

From Catania private transfer to Siracusa It is possible to attend a show “Teatro dei Pupi”, the famous  Sicilian string puppets. Each wooden puppet is hand made, its armours and dresses are hand made and the manufacture of these puppets takes many months of work

Day 2

The visit of Siracusa will last the whole day and you will be guided by your expert driver: the TEATRO GRECO, one of the best preserved Greek Theaters, the market, Ortigia area, the heart of Siracusa, the Apollo Temple, the Aretusa fountain, the gorgeous Piazza Duomo (cathedral)

Both lunch and dinner are free: we suggest that you try seafood dishes, like spaghetti alle vongole (clams), swordfish, raw shellfishes and tuna

Day 3

From Siracusa to Noto: just outside its walls you’ll visit the Sanctuary Madonna della Scala with view of the Alvernia mountain. In this area there is the cultivation of almonds, which are the basis of Sicilian pastry making: la martorana (raw paste), the amaretti, the Sicilian cassata, etc  Don’t forget to also eat the icecream at the flavor of cinnamon, saffron or jasmine…

Departure to Modica to visit this old town and its beautiful baroque palaces, but, overall, to taste the chocolate, dark brown, rough but unique and peerless in flavor. Overnight in Modica

Day 4

Early in the morning, before leaving Modica, it is possible to pop into a cheese factory where you can taste curd, ricotta or primo sale, made from sheep’s milk.  Departure to Scicli: on the way stop at Punta secca to eat an arancino (rice stuffed croquette). Stop at Vizzini and arrival in Caltagirone, famous for the production of high standard pottery. Don’t miss its museum of pottery and have a look at the two bell towers of Saint Peter’s church decorated  with majolica. But the symbol of the town is the imposing staircase of Santa Maria del Monte (142 steps).   Arrival in Catania in the late afternoon.

Day 5

No doubt that wine is one of the most important products of Sicily, particularly the one produced by the vineyards of the Etna slopes: strong with particular scents ETNA doc.  The wine route is an intriguing itinerary.  Honey is also noteworthy (miele di Zafferana Etnea) and it is the basis of many sweets, like torroncini, cubbaita, mostaccioli, zeppole… Don’t miss a visit to a honey farm.

Day 6

Depending on the departure timetable, it is possible to live some interesting experiences in Catania: a cooking lesson to prepare the arancini (two persons minimum), a look at Piscaria, the picturesque fish market, or a visit to the cellars of the city hostel, where an underground river is flowing….
