Overview

Friuli Venezia Giulia, an itinerary through history and culture

Friuli Venezia Giulia has always been a borderland, contested and at the same time a meeting point of different cultures that blend together (Italian, Germanic and Slavic).

The region’s territory is a mosaic of natural landscapes ranging from the Alps and the Dolomites to the Adriatic Sea, of rivers that have made the History of Italy, of hills covered with splendid vineyards, and of villages and elegant towns rich in millennial history. All this is combined with the pleasure of good food and good drink, as it boasts unique products and fine wines.

A beautiful but still little-known territory that offers a unique and fascinating mix of cultures, histories, breathtaking landscapes and culinary traditions, blending different customs, usages and roots.

DAY 2 - Gorizia - Miramare - Trieste - Gorizia Thursday, 16/10/2025
Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure by bus for Trieste.
Meeting with guide at Miramare Castle and tour of the castle.
Built between 1856 and 1860 as a residence for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, later Emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The archduke personally oversaw both the design of the mansion and the layout of the vast park (more than 22 hectares), an English and Italianate garden, rich in rare plants, sculptures and ponds, which descends in wide steps to the sea. The interior consists of more than 20 rooms: of particular note are the "Rooms of Maximilian," including the bedroom, furnished like a ship's cabin, and the "Throne Room." The rooms can be visited according to a pre-established itinerary that runs from the first floor to the second floor: you can admire the sumptuous original furnishings of the state rooms, private apartments, rich in works of art, furniture and precious objects. At the end transfer to a restaurant in the center and lunch. In the afternoon guided tour of Trieste: Piazza Unità, the Rive, the Old Town, the Roman Theater, the Borgo Teresiano and more... There will also be a climb to San Giusto Hill to see the Cathedral and the Roman Forum. At the end of the visit free time and then return to Gorizia and dinner at a restaurant.

Of all of them, the largest and best known is that of the basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption, dating back to the 4th century, but to this are added other precious mosaic remains from the Roman and early Christian periods, making Aquileia a kind of capital of Roman mosaic in the West.
